Hoi!
Music lessons are a wonderful way to stimulate a developing mind. I have a diverse background in music education and would love to meet your young person and help them discover their passion for music. Music formation lessons would introduce your child to pitch and rhythm through singing and dancing, and later, woodwind instruments such as the recorder and oboe. They will learn to read and write music and identify and replicate patterns of sounds. Music formation lessons will be based on the student’s interests so a fun time is ensured!
For ages 4 and up.
Although you may not have heard of the oboe (hobo), you have probably heard the sound of it without realising it! The oboe is a woodwind instrument made out out of a piece of wood shaped like a long, skinny cone. Like the recorder, it has holes which, when covered in different arrangements, change the pitch of the sound. However, the oboe also has pretty silver keys. The oboe’s sound is produced by a ‘double reed,’ a little piece of cane at the top, which you can learn to make yourself! When starting to learn the oboe, you will learn how to make a sound out of the reed alone, and then how to play different notes on the oboe. Soon you will be making a beautiful sound and playing exciting music! The oboe is a very special instrument, and it is my passion to share it with as many people as I can.
For more advanced oboists, I can provide instruction in playing technique, musical interpretation, and all stages of reed making. I can also assist student in preparing for performances, exams, and auditions.
Are you learning an instrument and need to learn music theory? Or you are studying music at school and need help preparing for an exam? Or maybe you’re just interested in how music works! Music theory is the science of music: its history, how different sounds are created, how it is notated and read, how it is performed, and why some music ‘sounds good’ and other music… doesn’t?
Music theory lessons are appropriate for beginner and advanced musicians as well as people with no musical background, with an interested in the science of music! The lessons with be aimed at teaching you about what you are interested in knowing about.
The recorder (blokfluit) is a wonderful instrument to get you started on your journey toward becoming a woodwind musician! You will start with the soprano (also known as descant) recorder, which belongs to a large family of recorders including the sopranino, alto, tenor, bass, and great bass recorders! While the recorder can lead you to learning other woodwind instruments like the oboe, flute, clarinet, bassoon, or saxophone, it can also become a lifelong passion! The first instrument I learnt was the recorder and it led me to discover my passion for music. To feel inspired, have a listen to Australian recorder player, Genevieve Lacey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRkkRDQjzjI
Writing music is so exciting and a wonderful way to get creative! I would love to help you express your musical ideas. This course is for everyone, but especially targeted towards those interested in the Art Music genre. You will learn how to find ideas, and write them down, both with pen and paper, as well as computer music notation software. I will teach you how to write music within traditional music notation conventions as well as how to find your own ways of notating music. You will learn about all the different instruments, and how to make the most of the sounds they can produce. I have been composing music since I was in high school, and there is no better feeling than hearing your ideas come to life! All that is needed to learn to compose music is a pencil, some paper, and your enthusiasm!
